I don’t think anyone will be surprised when I say that the beard is here to stay. The fact us men can leave the house in the morning without an extra grooming step is a massive bonus, who actually enjoys shaving when you have to do it yourself anyway? A quick trim and tidy up with the electric razor while you let your hair do what it does best is the way forward – I’ve definitely started to bank on those extra 20 minutes in the mornings.
Most guys are under the illusion that if you have a beard then you have to keep your hairstyle simple and boring as “otherwise it can be too much”, like being shaved or un-styled on top, we’ll I’m here to change that. Don’t get me wrong, considering a short/ trimmed style on top is a good look and actually one I would recommend for a beard but if that’s all you’ve ever had, then it’s time to mix it up.
1. The Parted Pompadour
For this hairstyle I look to the king of modern men, David Beckham for inspiration. The parted pompadour is classic hairstyle that’s never going to go out of fashion and is bang on trend for this year. The parting gives the hairstyle a sophisticated look; perfect to buffer the strong impact a beard can have, for us this style is definitely perfect for the office.
This hairstyle is perfect for short stubble like David’s all the way to a longer, thicker beard. There are no limitations on beard length with this hairstyle. Check out this guide on how to style your hair into a pompadour just like David’s, let’s admit it, we all want to be a bit more like David Beckham.
2. Slicked Back Top With Shaved Sides
Now, this style is more daring than the pompadour we discussed above but nevertheless it’s definitely worth considering if you have a beard. It’s a style that recently became fashionable, so you’d be bang on trend if you decided to rock it.
The long hair slicked back is definitely something different and is the perfect match for a long, thick beard. Still not 100% sure on how I feel about this hairstyle with a tiny amount of stubble, a full beard is definitely preferred for this one.
You will most likely have to train your hair for a few weeks to get your hair to lie flat and you will probably have to pay regular visits to your barber for a trim on the sides. The contrast between the long, slicked back top and the short sides are what makes this style bang on trend.
Tip: start with the parted pompadour while you grow your hair out and then once the length is where you want it, say goodbye to the sides.
3. The Man Bun
Don’t be scared. You don’t have to be a quirky model to pull this off but it is definitely THE most extravagant hairstyle for men at the moment but don’t let that put you off. Some can pull it off while some of us can’t, that’s life.
We recommend this hairstyle for men with beards because of the relaxed, at nature look it can give you. Great if you’re travelling the world or going on holiday, probably not so great to rock around the office but a great partner for a beard overall.
One of the perks of this hairstyle is that you don’t have to do anything to achieve it; your body does all the work for you. Could save you some wonga too.
The man bun is a perfect extension of the slicked back top with shaved sides hairstyle. Just keep growing your fridge out until you can tie it in a bun – that’s it. What you do with the sides is up to you as the man bun can have shaved sides or grown out sides, try both and see what suits your face best.
4. Trimmed, Not Shaved
Not shaved is very important for this one. We’re all for having really short hair, as long as there is still hair there. For some reason the combination of facial hair and a shaved heard remind me of circus strongman.
This hairstyle is a classic for summer as it can help to keep you cool – but don’t forget to watch out for sunburn.
It is what it says on the tin but our recommendation is to keep the beard shorter compared to other styles mentioned above. Also, if you have strong features such as a big nose or big ears maybe consider a longer hairstyle – if you keep your hair short then there is less to look at so you notice more.
This hairstyle is a classic and always will be, but we can thank it’s recent come back to Zayn Malik, he pulled it off well. With the girls loving him at the moment, there was probably a lot of ‘girlfriend pressure’ to look “more like Zayn” – the things us lads have to go through, hey?!
